Types of SSDs

There’s a variety of SSD hard drive technologies to meet different computing needs. MSY stocks different technologies and form factors: Serial AT Attachment (SATA), Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) and M.2 SSD drives.

2.5-inch SATA SSDs

MSY sells 2.5-inch SATA SSDs for desktop computers and older laptops or those seeking a cheaper storage upgrade. These SSDs are a cost-effective way to noticeably boost performance over an HDD drive, and they benefit from wide-ranging compatibility.

M.2 SATA SSDs

MSY also stocks M.2 SATA drives for compatible devices. These M.2 drives have the same 6Gbps max speed potential as 2.5-inch SATA SSDs but are offered in a smaller form factor, which plugs into compatible motherboards.

NVMe M.2 SSDs

While some M.2 SSDs are SATA drives, others are faster Non-volatile Memory Express (NVMe) drives that also connect directly to compatible motherboards and boast theoretical transfer speeds up to 20Gbps. MSY stocks fast Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) 3.0 and newer, faster PCIe 4.0 drives for blistering speeds.

Other SSD considerations

With the right SSD technology out of the way, the next big considerations are capacity, combability and brand. These factors have an impact on the price you pay.

SSD budget

MSY has SSDs as cheap as $30, across SATA and M.2 form factors. You can also find 500GB SSDs for under $100 at MSY, 1TB SSD drives for not much more than $100, and 2TB drives for just over $200.

SSD brand

MSY stocks SSDs and SSD components from more than a dozen brands. Buy an SSD hard drive from popular brands like Samsung, Crucial, Kingston, Seagate and many more.

SSD capacity

MSY stocks SSD storage capacities from 120GB up to 4TB and even 8TB drives. You can get away with around 256GB for a primary operating-system drive but consider a 1TB or 2TB SSD for greater storage versatility.

SSD compatibility

Older desktops and laptops can get a new lease on life by upgrading from HDD to 2.5-inch SSD. Motherboard compatibility on desktop PCs determines whether you can tap into NVMe PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 speeds. MSY also stocks external SSD hard drives and PS5 SSD storage upgrades.

SSD FAQs

MSY has easy answers for the most popular SSD questions.

What SSD is best?

The best SSD is the one that meets your specific computing needs. There’s not a big gap in SSD prices up to 2TB storage, which means it’s more important to factor in compatibility and capacity.

SSD vs HDD: is SSD better than HDD?

SSD is a newer storage technology that’s measurably better than HDD. SSD drives are faster and quieter than HDDs, they tend to last longer and they don’t need to be defragmented.

What does SSD mean on a computer?

An SSD on a computer means faster boot-up times and quicker loading times for software, including getting into games faster. Basically, buying an SSD is a great investment in saving time.

What does an SSD do?

An SSD is used to store data on your desktop, laptop or other compatible devices. SSDs work with a device’s RAM and CPU to access your data. The faster those components, the faster the access.

Can I use an SSD on a PS5?

The PlayStation 5 can receive a storage capacity boost by installing a compatible M.2 SSD. A compatible PS5 SSD is an NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive with a compact heatsink, which can reach minimum sequential read speeds of 5,500MB/sec.

Is a 256GB SSD better than a 1TB HDD?

It depends on what you’re after. A 1TB HDD has four times the storage space, but a 256GB SSD can potentially read data up to 10 times faster and write data up to 20 times faster than the HDD.
